Beau, Our Goofy Golden Retriever
by Jim
Many, many years ago, we adopted a 6 year old Golden Retriever named Beau. He was a beautiful dog inside and out. At age 13, he left us because of cancer.
In the time we were fortunate to have his company, he was the happiest, silliest dog we've ever owned. You couldn't be sad around this guy because he wouldn't let you. He'd sit in front of us with that big old tongue lolling out and those happy big brown eyes and you couldn't do anything but smile at him.
Beau loved to play, especially with tennis balls. He would always carry one with him, just in case someone would like a game of "throw the ball".
For 7 years, he wouldn't sleep in the bedroom with us or the other dogs. His place was in the hallway, guarding the front door. He knew this was where people came and went so he made it his job to be at the ready, just in case.
When Beau was diagnosed with cancer, it was heartbreaking for us. But believe it or not, he kept on being happy and goofy up until the end.
I know that when it is time for us to "go home", Beau will be waiting with his tennis ball in his mouth and those big beautiful eyes so full of love, saying "Welcome home, now throw the ball".
