Tips for Finding a Good Dog Breeder
Great! You've found a dog breeder not far from where you live. Your state breed association has them on record as active. What's next? Make an appointment with him/her.
Reputable breeders have the improvement of their breed at heart. They spend years researching genetics and having their breeding stock tested for diseases to produce the best quality puppies and parents. Always listen to their advice.
When you arrive look around. Are the kennels clean and odor free? Are the dogs and puppies happy and healthy? Talk to the breeder. Is he/she knowledgeable about the breed?
Are more than one breed being raised? If so, this may be a red flag. Our suggestion is only patronize an owner that is "breed specific" meaning only one breed of dog is being bred.
Plan to spend most of the day. The owner will let you spend time with her puppies. Look for the pup that is playful and comes to you for attention. Don't pick an over aggressive one or a pup that sits in a corner. Middle of the road is best.
There will be a contract of sale for you to sign and vet checks are performed for clean bills of health before the pups go to their new homes. Usually the puppies can go home between 9 - 12 weeks of age.
