Dog Diabetes

When the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, as with people, dog diabetes develops.

When sugar can't be processed through the pancreas, it goes into the blood which winds up in the urine. This causes the dog to urinate frequently which can lead to dehydration and therefore, the dog drinks more to compensate.

If you notice your dog drinking and urinating excessively, take him to the vet for an exam. Blood work and urinalysis will be performed and be able to show what's going on.

Diabetes can also cause incontinence in your dog. With all the drinking and urinating, he will have to go out often because he won't be able to hold it.

Diabetes can't be cured but with daily insulin injections and proper diet it can be managed.

Blood tests will determine how much insulin your dog will need. Your vet will show you how to give the injections.

Just like with humans, your senior dog will need a special diet. He will need to be fed specific amounts of food at certain times of the day to keep his blood sugar level stable.

If you can't be at home to administer his diet or shots, then leave him with your vet for the day while you are gone. It's worth the little extra money you will spend to keep your diabetic dog on track.
