Dog Groomer
A dog groomer maintains the appearance of a specific dog breed. Or clips and neatens up a dog that has become horribly matted or had contact with substances which turn a coat into a mess. Some groomers have their own shop, others work out of their homes and still others have a mobile grooming van and come to you. Normal grooming establishments have a few employees along with the dog groomer. These people brush and bathe the dogs, getting them ready for the groomer's expertise. They also answer phones and schedule appointments.
The groomer must have a knowledge of skin and coat conditions that effect dogs because he/she will be the first to see any problems. Groomers provide many services to dog owners. Not only bathing, but clipping, trimming, cutting dog toenails, flea dipping, ear cleaning, etc. If you would like to become a groomer, you can start by getting a job at a grooming shop as a dog bather or receptionist. You will gradually learn how to brush out and demat a dog and if you show promise, then the groomer will take you in hand and teach you the complete grooming process.
You do not have to take any courses or become licensed to become a groomer, however, there are grooming schools that offer a program to become certified if you choose to enroll. Many professional groomers keep up to date on the latest findings by reading trade papers and attending seminars. There is a lot of equipment you will need to purchase to get started. If you will be working out of your house, you will need crates of varying sizes, dryers, clippers, brushes, combs, shampoos, conditioners, flea and tick products, grooming tables, restraints, and the list goes on. And if you are setting up a shop, there is rent to consider along with all the above supplies.
Groomers are essential for the overall appearance of the family pet as well as show dogs. If you decide on this top dog job, then who knows, you might be grooming the next Best In Show winner at Westminster.
