Dog Obedience
Dog obedience competition is usually held at the same time during a breed dog show. This activity is about the basic commands you taught your dog as a pup with a few extras thrown in.
The only equipment you will need is a collar and leash. Very cost effective. Training can easily be done at home depending on the level you and your dog will be competing in. You may need to obtain a jump and dumbbells for more advanced work.
Judging rates how you and your dog work together and how well your dog listens to you.
Beginner basic obedience is all performed on lead. You enter the ring, your dog will sit at your left side. The judge gives you instructions to follow and grades your dog's response.
A figure eight is two people standing opposite a few feet apart and you and your pet wind through them to show how your dog responds to tight surroundings. A long sit (1 minute) and long down (3 minutes) will test his patience and ability to obey when there are distractions present.
As you progress up the obedience ladder, you will encounter more involved exercises. Along with basic commands, you will train your dog to jump, retrieve a dumbbell, pick out the dumbbell with your scent on it and bring it to you and work entirely off lead.
All breeds of dogs qualify for the obedience competition.
