Dog Poisons

Dog poisons can vary from something as simple as a piece of chocolate to anti-freeze in your garage.

If your dog has gotten into anything suspicious call your vet immediately and if they are not available call the poison control hotline.

The National Animal Poison Control Hotline is 1-800-548-2423. Keep it handy like you would for humans. Pets usually ingest anything they get their noses into. If you think your pet has eaten something poisonous, call the hotline immediately and follow their instructions.

It's holiday time or you're throwing a party. The house is in an uproar, you are stressed to the point someone has to pull you off the ceiling. Been There!

Keep in mind your dog is affected by all this as well. The best place for him is in a quiet part of the house with a chew or toy, water, food and quiet music to soothe him. Unless you want a very sick dog on your hands, keep him away from temptation.

It is very easy for a loose dog at a party to get into food and drink that is harmful. Also, your well meaning, dog loving guests will give Fido a handout once they look in those big, soulful eyes.

If your dog is well behaved at parties then let him mingle. But stress to your guests that they are not to give him any handouts. Some of his own treats will be sufficient if they feel they have to give him a goodie.

Some poisons you need to be aware of that could harm or kill your pet:

Commercial Pesticides

Human Medications

Anti-freeze

Christmas Tree Water

Ice Melt

Potpourris

Chocolate

Fertilizer

Household cleaners

Paint

Rubbing alcohol

Human Grooming Products

The best way to keep your dog safe is to take precautions all year round and especially at Holiday time and having a party.

Your pet may give you a dirty look and think you are being mean by not giving him that little piece of chocolate.

Just know that you are doing him and you a BIG favor.
