Dog Seizures

Dog seizures can be caused by many things. Disease, head trauma, poisons, the list goes on.

Knowing what to do and acting quickly is the best way to help your dog.

Seizures may last for a few minutes. The dog may become rigid, appear anxious or hysterical, salivate profusely, loose control of bladder and bowels or become unconscious.

Usually seizures are not fatal unless they keep occurring or don't stop.

Call your vet immediately. He/she will tell you to bring in your dog right away.

Keep your hands away from your dog's mouth during a seizure. Dog's don't swallow their tongues like humans.

Wrap the dog up in a blanket and try to keep him from hurting himself. If he is snapping, put him in the back of the car in the blanket.

Probably by the time you arrive at the vet, the seizure will be over. Your vet will examine your dog and run some tests to see what problem caused the condition.

He/she will also give you some seizure medication to give to your pet and will also have you write down how often the seizures occur.

Causes of seizures has to do with brain function or neurological disease. This can come from epilepsy, poisons or head injury.

Always make sure your vet knows exactly what your dog ate, any injury that was sustained or possible hereditary epilepsy in your dog's breed.
