Dog Teeth Cleaning
Dog teeth cleaning is as easy as brushing your own teeth. Most pets enjoy this, especially if started at an early age.
Regular dental care involves the teeth and gums. Clean your dog's teeth when you are grooming him so you won't forget. There are great products that make this job very easy. If your pet has pearly whites, then once a week brushing with a finger brush or tooth brush and paste for dogs will do nicely. The finger brush is made of rubber with soft bristles that fit on your finger. Just add doggie toothpaste and "brush" it on your dog's teeth and gums. Some dog owners and dog's prefer a "toothbrush". It works the same way as the finger brush.
Another implement to use is the scraper. This is like the tool your dentist uses on your teeth. It removes any tarter build up on the tooth. To use it, place the "foot" against the tooth near the gum where the tarter starts. Then scrape downward to loosen the plaque. You may have to do this a few times, depending on how deeply the tarter is packed on the tooth.
You can usually tell when your dog needs a cleaning. The teeth are coated in tarter and the breath smells bad. At this point, your vet will want to perform a dentistry which is much like having our teeth cleaned. Since any sane dog wouldn't stand still for what we go through, the vet will anesthetize your pet and give a thorough cleaning of gums, teeth, tongue, and if needed, extract any bad teeth. Your pet will be able to go home the same day, probably with some antibiotics just in case.
There is a danger by not cleaning your dog's teeth or having a dentistry. All the plaque on the teeth will cause gum disease, which will cause infection, which will spread to all parts of the body, break down vital organs and cause disease. So, just like with humans, proper oral care is essential for a healthy mouth and body. Cleaning your dog's teeth from the beginning when he was a puppy, will make adult dog teeth cleaning easier for you both.
