Many dog owners do not need professional training to teach their dogs the basic commands. However, there are many more who don't have the time or ability to undertake this job. Keep in mind that training a dog requires knowledge of dogs, dog psychology, patience and commitment. You have to know what you are doing and be good at it before you proceed with this job. There are no requirements for licensing obedience trainers at the moment, however the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors is trying to set professional standards to certify trainers.
A dog obedience trainer teaches the dog to follow basic obedience commands. Many dog obedience trainers began their careers working for established trainers and learning from them. Some professional trainers will allow their assistants to work with dogs after they have shown promise as future trainers. If you are interested in becoming an obedience trainer, start by volunteering at a training facility. When a job becomes available, apply for it. Also attend dog shows, obedience shows, find jobs working with dogs, read, read, read about dogs and talk to people who are established trainers to get their input. The more you know, the better prepared you will be.
The need for qualified obedience trainers is in strong demand at the present. Many dog owners don't have the time to train their pets. Hectic lifestyle and two income families put great stress on a person's time.
