Famous Dogs
With the invention of moving pictures in the 1900's and television in the late 1940's, famous dogs began to appear.
There were quite a few four legged heros of the movies and TV. We have listed a couple of the most popular below. The first was Rin Tin Tin. Rinty was a German Shepherd and the star of many silent movies. When talking pictures came about, he transitioned easily. Rin Tin Tin was so popular that in the 1950's, he got his own TV series. Animal actors were a great draw in the 1940's thru the 1960's in both movies and TV. The next, and our personal favorite, is Lassie, a Collie who won everybody's hearts in the 1940's movie, "Lassie Come Home". The resulting success of the movie generated sequels and her (his) own TV series in the 1952. Lassie's TV career ended in the 1980's making it the longest running show in TV history. Some Lassie fun: All were males. Females are smaller and shed profusely after having litters, so the boys have been used since the original movie. All present day Lassies are descendants of the original animal named "Pal". All puppies from the celebrated dog are either training to continue the legacy or given away to family or close friends. We know because we tried to purchase a Lassie pup years ago. A few other famous canines are: Frazier's Eddie; Air Bud's Buddy; Benji; and Annie's Sandy.
