Older Dog Care
Remember when you first brought him home? He was rarin' to go! Now your dog is aging. Older dog care is very important at this stage in your pet's life.
All of us experience old age. It is unfortunate that our dogs get there before we do. So let's look at a few ways to keep him comfortable through these changes.
When your dog gets older physical and psychological changes appear. He may be getting white around the muzzle and head. He may not exercise and play as much and sleep more. He also may not eat as much and become grouchy. This is normal. The photo is of our 13 year old Sheltie, Casey who passed away 3 years ago. He is showing his age with white on his face and slight dullness to his once bright eyes.
Your veterinarian will know these signs and vet medicine now is up to date on senior dog care and nutrition for your geriatric dog. They stay up to date on the latest medicines and treatments. If you have concerns, talk to your vet. A few diseases/conditions that may effect your older dog are listed below and will be discussed in the following pages:
Dog Cancer Symptoms
Dog Diabetes
Dog Heart Problems
Dog Incontinence
Dog Seizures
Saying Goodbye
Understanding the changes he is going through will help a lot. You will be able to cope better and make allowances as his body ages. Walk with him instead of running. Don't overdo because he will tire easily. Feed him smaller portions. Give him a good quality senior dog food such as Iams or Pedigree. Give him an orthopedic bed to sleep in.
The most important part of older dog care...Give him lots of love and pets. He has given you many years of enjoyment, play and love. His body needs to wind down. Keep him in the family element. He many not want to romp like a pup, but being near you and watching over you and the family is still his job.
When your dog starts showing his age, we found that bringing in a new puppy or young dog into the family helps. Your senior citizen begins to feel young again and as the new guy is trained by you, he will quietly teach the newcomer what is expected when your old friend can no longer continue. But, always remember, the older dog is top dog. Let it be known to all that he is still in charge.
