Pet Friendly Motels
There are a few chains out there that are pet friendly motels. Most are not. Be sure to tell them you will be traveling with your dog when you make reservations.
Pet policies vary from chain to chain. All charge a nominal fee for your pet and some ask for a non refundable deposit. Charges range from $5-$20 dollars pet pet per night, not including the deposit. If you find a pet friendly motel that charges an outrageous pet fee, look somewhere else for accommodations unless they have amenities catering to your pet.
Some of them include pet sitting in your room or dog walks, pet bedding, bowls and pet turn down service. I'm serious! Upscale hotels in New York or Las Vegas offer these.
Management requests that you do not leave your pet unattended in the room. A travel crate is ideal. Put a toy and chew in with him and turn on the TV. Keep the volume at the level of normal viewing. Choose a program with music and talking. When we leave our kids in the room, we turn on the Weather Channel for them. It has the right mix of voice and music.
Another tip, put out the Do Not Disturb sign on the doorknob. Also inform the desk you are going out for awhile and your dog is in the room crated. Ask them to inform housekeeping not to make up the room so your pet won't be disturbed.
When you want your room cleaned, wait until the next morning and call housekeeping directly. Let them know you will be out with your pet for a few hours and that you would like the room made up as soon as possible.
Believe it or not some housekeeping staff will make up your dog's bed or crate. All the considerate people who did this for our guys received a healthy tip for their efforts.
Always clean up after your dog when exercising him. Plastic grocery bags are a good picker upper. Then toss it in the trash can. Being a considerate pet owner will keep our kids in good standing with the travel community and the motels will keep their doors open to our four legged friends.
