Pet Travel Supplies

When putting together your pet travel supplies, the first thing to pack is his current immunization record. Also get a clean bill of health from your vet.



Keep his shot record handy. I remember one time when we were vacationing with our kids, we were stopped at a rest area and a policeman was patrolling.

He came over to us while we were walking our dogs and asked for their immunization record. I produced it immediately.

Some states are very strict about up to date vaccinations.

If your pet is on medication make sure you get enough for the trip plus a few days extra.

Also get a script from the vet to take with you in case his meds are lost. You can take it to any veterinarian in route and have it refilled.

You will need to pack for your dog similar to packing for yourself. We keep a suitcase specifically for our kids "stuff."

Make a list of what you need for your dog and a few weeks before you leave, have it all ready to go.

Ok, let's start packing. Make sure his collar or harness is sturdy with your pet's id tags attached.

These tags should have your name, address, phone # and dog's name on it in case he is lost.

If you find you won't have room for his crate, take his blanket or towel instead. You can lay it on the floor of the hotel room for him to sleep on and it has the familiar scents of home to help him relax.

There are travel crates available that fold down to a compact size. You may want to look into these if you decide to crate your pet on the trip.

Pack water and food bowls. Again, travel bowls are available that collapse for easy storage.

Bring a few bottles of water from home and integrate it into the water he drinks while you are traveling so his stomach won't get upset by the sudden change.

Also don't feed your dog while on the road. Give a treat or two but wait til you've stopped for the night to give him his regular feeding.

Remember to pack a toy and some chews. This will keep your dog busy in the car and hotel.

Also bring a brush or comb to keep up his grooming routine. And don't forget pooper bags when packing pet travel supplies. Always clean up after your pet at rest stops, hotel grounds and everywhere you take him to go.
