Puppy Bad Behavior - A Definite NO

Puppy bad behavior. We've all seen dogs with behavior problems. Sadly, pets are allowed to develop this behavior and not corrected for it.

We will touch on a few of the problems we have had and corrections that have worked for us.

Correcting these problems must start when your pet is a puppy.

BARKING - This is a natural thing for dogs to do. They communicate happiness, fear, play and protection by their barks. However, excessive barking is extremely irritating. Some breeds are prone to this (our Sheltie is one).

If someone is at the door or on your property, barking is to let you and whoever is on the other side of the door that your dog is ready for them. This is expected behavior from your dog.

I've found a can with some pennies in it distracts the dog from barking at nothing. Give it a toss and say "Quiet" firmly. When your pup does, treat and praise.

Keep at this and the problem should resolve itself quickly.

PUPPY BITING - As this implies, puppies nip and bite because they feel with their mouths. Those baby teeth are like needles and can put a real hurt on you.

You are not a chew toy! When he starts gnawing on you, tell him "no" firmly and remove his mouth from your person. When he stops this behavior, give him a real chew and praise.

Remember, puppy teeth does not belong on human skin.

JUMPING - Do not allow your puppy to jump on people. Believe it or not, some people are afraid of dogs and this will terrify them.

Either your guest or yourself can remove the dog by saying "off" and placing the pup on the floor. If he keeps jumping repeat the process. Treat and praise for the wanted response.

These are a few of the problems we have dealt with over the years and the corrections that worked for us. We can't say all our "kids" were little angels, but they came close.
