Puppy Car Ride Training

Puppy car ride training started for your pet when his breeder took him to get his checkups and first vaccinations.

You brought him home in the car. These times were probably upsetting to him. Now we need to make him comfortable and happy to go for a ride.

Start slow. Take the puppy out to the car and sit with him a few minutes. Bring along his blanket and toy and a few treats.

If he gets too upset, calm him down and give him a treat when he relaxes. Talk to him, play with him, praise him for doing well.

Make time in the car longer and start the engine after a few days. Put on a quiet, soothing radio station or CD. Do this a few more days, playing, talking, praising.

Next step, have someone move the car out of the driveway and back again. If the puppy gets upset calm him and treat when he relaxes. Make trips a little longer when your puppy stays relaxed.

Repeat the process using the crate. Dogs should not be loose in the car unless properly confined.

There are barriers you can purchase for cars and SUV's to keep the dog in the back of the vehicle or you can put them in the crate.

Personally, we use the barrier, keeping our kids in the back, but they can still look around and enjoy the ride.

Like all training, repetition is vital. Teaching your puppy to ride in a car won't happen overnight so be patient.

Also do not feed the pup before going for car rides. Wait until you get home and he settles down. The movement of the car can have an unwelcome effect on a dog's full stomach.
