Puppy Care - The Basics

Puppy care starts when you bring him home. It will be an exciting time for you and a confusing one for the pup.

It will be the first time away from the home he's known and his mother and brothers and sisters. He will be scared. Put yourself in his paws.

Everything you will need for your new pup can be found on the Puppy Supplies page of this section.

Show the pup where his food and water bowls are. Don't feed him right away but give him some water. After he has rested, give him a little food.

Take him to his crate and put him in with a towel or blanket you've rubbed over him to get his scent or better still, take it with you to pick him up and rub it on his mother and siblings. This will comfort him in his new space.

Don't let him have the run of the house. Just allow him in one room at a time until he is use to his new home.

This way his little mind can take things in easier. When he's grown up and knows the rules he will be able to handle the entire house without accidents or mishaps.

While you are loving on him before his training begins, touch and rub him all over.

Play with his feet, toes, legs, ears, teeth (no biting, the pup not you). This will get him use to being handled by you, the vet, groomer for baths, exams, nail trims, etc.

Proper puppy care in the beginning will last for his lifetime.

All ready to love and nurture your new family member? You will have so many years of companionship with this new little guy/girl. Enjoy!
