Puppy Crate Training is a Must!
Puppy crate training is very important. It teaches the pup where he will sleep and to get use to confinement.
This is where he will be staying if he is boarded, at the vet, the groomer or traveling with you. It also teaches house breaking because a dog will not soil where he sleeps. Essentials you will need for your puppy can be found on the
Puppy Supplies
page of this section.
The breeder started the puppy crate training process since he was born. Now you continue. You have brought your new puppy home and he is tired. He's had a long day and he's a little scared. Start his training by placing him in his "space" to rest. This is where he will be sleeping, taking time outs, going to chill and nap.
After you have placed him inside with a blanket and a toy, you and your family go about your business around the house. You may hear little sounds coming from the pup until he settles down. Don't go running in cos this will show him all he has to do is squeak and you'll be there. He has control.
When he wakes up though, he will let you know and at that time go in, take him outside to go potty. Puppies will have to go potty after waking, eating, or playing. Always tell him he's a good boy and gush with praise.
Love on him and introduce him to some more toys and chews. Play with him. Let him pick out his favorite. It will have his scent and yours on it. This will be his "teddy bear" to sleep with in the crate.
Ok, it's bedtime the first night. You tell him time for bed, take him out to potty and put him in with his blanket and toy. He will cry. The sound will tear at your heart but be strong. It happens to all of us. You want to pick him up, cuddle him and put him in bed with you. That's ok if you want a dog to sleep with you. Ours have and still do.
In addition to his "blankie" and "teddy bear" turn on the radio or put on a CD with soft, soothing music on low volume. It will help relax the pup and he will settle down much quicker and go to sleep. You will probably have to do this for about a week, then he should go into his crate without any help at all. You never know when your pet will have to be confined. Getting him/her use to a crate as a puppy is a win win situation in the future.
