Getting Serious - Puppy Leash Training

Puppy leash training can save your dog's life. This is easy for you and the puppy and an essential for your pet's welfare.

Start by putting the collar or harness on the pup and let him get use to the feel of something on his body.

Supervise his activities with the collar or harness on cos the little guy can get into trouble.

There has been some controversy about using collars. They can be dangerous.

We recommend using a harness because it doesn't put stress and pressure on your dog's neck and throat.

After a few days he will think nothing of his collar or harness so now attach the leash.

Let him drag it around to get use to this as well. Again, under supervision.

When you and the pup are ready, put the collar/harness and leash on him. I usually have some treats or his favorite toy to work on this part.

You are going to get him use to feeling a gentle tug on the end of the leash.

Start to walk with the end of the leash in your hand, slapping your thigh and say his name.

When he walks a few steps with you, give him a treat and much praise. Go a little further each time but don't overdo it.

A puppy can only retain so much so 5-10 minutes a day will be enough.

If he pulls away from you when you give a slight tug, get him started by using his toy. Then continue with the lesson.

Only give him the treat after he has successfully completed the action.

Remember, repetition will make the training go easier and the puppy will learn quicker.

This may take a few days for your puppy to get the idea, but as always, have patience.
