Traveling With Pets
Traveling with pets is a lot of fun. Pet friendly vacations are becoming more popular with doggie resorts springing up and people resorts that allow pets.
It's that time! Getting ready for some well earned R&R. The whole family is rarin' to go including your dog. Traveling with pets can be fun, but if you don't prepare, it can be a disaster. We travel with our dogs whenever we can and the following sections are tips and trips we have taken and what we have learned to pass on to you.
If you have young children and decide to take your pet, think again. Your dog will be better off with a pet sitter or in a boarding kennel and so will you. Little ones can be a handful and the extra excited "kid" could put your vacation in the "why did we do that?" memory bank. However, if you have older children, they can help with the dog chores on a car trip and it will be a lot of fun for the whole family.
And, of course, if you are flying, leave Fido home. It can be dangerous and traumatic for your dog to fly in the baggage compartment of a plane.
Before you schedule your trip, spend the night with your dog at a pet friendly hotel close to home. Bring the whole family. This will help your pet get use to sleeping and eating somewhere unfamiliar. You will teach him not to bark or get upset at the different noises in these strange surroundings. Take his crate or blanket, toys, bowls. Watch TV in the room, take him for walks around the hotel grounds and pick up after him.
If you can't decide whether to take your dog on vacation or not, the general rule is that very young, very old, sick or a pet with behavior problems should stay home.
